I believe that John Mayled was born in Creech St Michael about 1788. I think it is unlikely that he is buried in Creech, however I am wondering if perhaps there are records of his( possible) parents / and or their marriage. . . .
Kind Regards

Jackie,
We do have a Mayled burial (Amelia 1885, aged 65, and Thomas 1887 aged 72) in the churchyard. I also have some family details of the name in my records but no John. They are all later than the dates you mention. If they will add to your knowledge let me know.
Our parish church has just started a new website http://www.crtbenefice.org.uk/ and they may have more information than we have.
We did have a previous thread about the Mayled name, here is a link, http://www.creechstmichael.net/aaq/i-am-trying-to-trace-my-family-tree/ perhaps you could post a message to them.
There are lots of avenues for you to explore – I do not want to take the excitement of discovery away from you.
Good Hunting

Hi, I found your website and wondered if you know of anyone who has a room to rent in Creech St Michael. I work full time in Taunton. My telephone number is 07961 172258. Or do you know anywhere I could put an Advert to say I am looking for a room to rent? Many thanks
Frazer, Taunton
He would be 60 to 70 years old. His parents where Ethel and Dick and was brought up in Baldwin Road, Taunton. (of Rowen Way) I would appreciate any help you could give us .If you need any more info I will try to answer.

Hilary McKay, daughter of Mr Leonard Amose who died in June 1974 – husband of Edna Stace - like to know the actual plot number at St Michael’s Church of her father – records have been mislaid and she is trying all areas. Hope someone can help.

Dear Jill,
Searching for plot numbers for Mr Leonard Amose.
I am conducting a complete mapping of churchyard to update an existing plan – 40% complete so far. This is a personal quest and I do have the church officers permission, with a view to publish an index of the names on the website.
The name you have been given is unfortunately inaccurate, Edna Stace was actually married to a Leonard Amos Stace. Because this difference in names had to be resolved I have several other pieces of information from the internet about Leonard and Edna, if you don’t already know them. To protection the family these details will not be placed on this website in line with Data Protection guidance, unless we are given permission.
Here in the churchyard is what I have found so far – a wooden bench dedicated to the memory of “L A Stace 1917~1974”, this is located up the churchyard path around to the left under a yew tree. The lichen partially covering his name has been recently removed so you may have found this place already. The burial area East of the bench is probably my next task – possibly starting next week.
Don’t build up your hopes as there are a few unknown graves in the area. While Leonard is recorded as dying in Taunton in 1974 if a headstone was not placed by the family it is possible that the exact location could be overgrown and ‘lost’ once the grave position passes beyond personal recollection. I have so far discovered several examples of such cases.
The circa 1980 churchyard plan that I am using as a template for the survey is much written on and the name Stace does not appear, this could just be an oversight.
The Register of Deaths for Creech St Michael in the 1970′s will be held in the Somerset Heritage Centre and the family should take what paper records they do have, birth, marriage and death certificates to the centre and ask for the parish records of that era. They can carry out a search and armed with this information, his granddaughter(?) might be able to get a possible location, which was usually written in the register. If it was a cremation that opens up other possibilities.
This is as much as I can do with the limited information given so far. I hope that it will enable you to take things further.
Regards

Hi Peter
My mother doris smart worked with and for Harry when he was a Manager at the Creech St Michael paper mill. Mill Lodge was a tied and tenanted house and when Harry retired my mother was offered the house as a tenant. My parents passed away in the early 90′s and I now live here much of the time.
Mill Lodge I understand was the original Mill Managers house and I believe was where Mill workers ‘clocked in’ every day,
You really should make contact with people who worked at the Mill in the 50s/60′s and if you e mail me direct I will ask them if it is ok for you to make contact with them. Regards Derek

Derek,
Thank you so much for your response. Sorry just to have discovered it. I do remember your mother’s name. Grandad retired in 1967, when I was 11 years old. They had to decide whether to buy Mill Lodge, move back to Lancashire (where Edna’s sister was still living), buy a new bungalow in Creech or move to near Cheltenham (where Harry’s sister and family lived). In the end they chose the last option. They had about 10 very happy years at Bishop’s Cleeve before Grandad (Harry) died. I remember your mother’s name being mentioned at the time.
It is funny – only today I was describing the room layout of Mill Lodge to my wife. I can visualise every room and its furniture. The room facing the mill (sitting room) was only used for visitors! Most of the time it was unheated – I only remember it being used on Boxing Days when friends of my grandparents visted. I have nothing but happy memories associated with the house. Every Christmas, we would spend at Mill Lodge. I used to enjoy train spotting the steam and diesel engines. I would pester Grandad to take me to see the Chard steam engine when he returned from work.
It is nearly 45 years since I was last in the house. It had been flooded and snow had got into the roof one year. Wonder how it has changed! I saw on streetview that houses are being built on the land between the Parry’s old house and the terrace. I used to feed Medical’s chickens with bits of cabbage on that land. I think that there used to be an orchard there when my mother was a girl.
Please do pass on my email address to anyone who can remember Harry and Edna Mawdsley. Although they had lived in Creech for 33 years, they never lost their strong Lancashire accents.
Best wishes,
Paul Waterworth
