  3. I am trying to trace my family tree

  4. I am trying to trace my family tree (Mayled). I know that David Mayled ( Born 1853-died? 1945) married Sarah Maddock (Born 1863-died 1955) I know that david mayled wast to the best of my knowledge born in Creech st Michael and I have no other details . I would be very interested if anyone has any information regarding them in particular David’s parents. I know they had childern Lilly, Arthur and  Henry. I belive Arthur was born in approx 1896 and died in infancy but again I have drawn a blank about him and when he died and what he died of  -any information would be very much appreciated.

    Regards Anthony, Chester

    1. Hi Anthony,
As it happens I was standing in the creech churchyard (I am up dating the records) and was within 5 metres of the Mayled grave when your message appeared on the website. The inscription on the ornate headstone basically states that Amelia wife of Thomas MAYLED of this parish, died 19th Aug 1885 aged 65. And her husband Thomas Mayled, died 27 Jan 1887 aged 72. This means that they both should appear on the 1881census and those of previous years, which may give their children.
Their are a few MADDOCK graves also in the churchyard. Whether any of this fits into your tree only you can tell.
There are five Mayled’s, which is not a common name, in the local telephone directory.
I hope this helps, family history will often have gaps that we can seldom fill.
      Regards

    3. A cousin of my gg father(Charles Mayled born in 1848) was Henry David Mayled whe was the son of Amelia and Thomas Mayled of Creech St Michael) Like his father Henry David was a stone mason and probably followed his cousins to South East Wales. He was living in the parish of Mynyddislwyn,Newport. According to the 1891 census he was 36. His wife was Sarah who was a Maddock fron=m Creech St Michael. Also at the same time Henry David’s brother – Jessie lived in the same area. You mentioned that he died in 1945. I have often wondered what happened to this other welsh connection. I know that Dora and Edna Mayled live still in the outskirts of cardiff and are cosuins of my father george mayled-who lived in Dinas powys- I am wondering where you fall into the Mayled Dynasty , and any details you can provide would be useful
      Kind Regards

  5. any football/clubs suitable for my ten year old son in Creech?

    September 22, 2011
  6. HI, are there any football/clubs suitable for  my ten year old son in Creech?

    Eleanor, Hollinsworth Park

    1. Hi Eleanor,

You may have already found out about clubs for your son. If not here are a few ideas.

The Scouts and Cubs have telephone contact numbers under ‘organisations’ on this website, give them a call. They may have more information to pass on.
Creech Rangers FC also have a page – try them – they are an adult team but may have knowledge about youth teams in the area, they practice at Heathfield Community School so they school website might be another avenue to explore.

Creech St Michael Primary did have a very successful football team a few years ago.

Sorry for the delay – good luck

  7. Pencil sketch of the church?

    September 13, 2011
  8. My parents got married at creech church & are celebrating there 40th anniversary 25/9/11. I wanted to give them a pencil sketch of the church, do you know where I could get one. Thank you

    1. Amy,

With a short notice before the 40th anniversary my thoughts are that the local art group (see their page on this website) may be your first place to try. They meet most Mondays and Thursdays. They work in all sorts of mediums and may have a pencil sketch that would be suitable. Their telephone numbers are on the web-page.

The Church magazine did have a sketch of the church on the front page and I have enquired but it is no longer available. I do not have other sources.

      Good luck

  9. Information on the Bobbett that is buried inside the church?

  10. Do you have any information on the Bobbett that is buried insidr thre church the grave stone is now covered over with laminate flooring?

    1. Dear Jacqueline,

I am, working with the churchwarden, about to start a project to put as much detail from the church memorial inscriptions as possible online. One of the inscriptions was of a member of the Bobbett family.
All memorial tablets inside the church and those readable gravestones are on record so we can access them.
This is likely to be a large project but if possible I will get the inscription for you.

I also have references to a William Bobbett( a village overseer) in 1808. And a David Bobbett in 1839 as being entitled to serve on a jury (1839). These two persons are mentioned in a school project researched and written by the children in 1970.

    2. Jacqueline,
Further to your enquiries about the Bobbetts, my wife reminded me that June Small (who was awarded an MBE in June 2011) published a book on the history of Creech St Michael, also gave talks on the people of the village and certainly had a wealth of knowledge of the Bobbetts.
Looking at her book she devotes a whole page listing the activities of the various family members for over 350 years right back as far as 1569 to a Thomas Bobbett.
I think that she may still have copies of her book for sale if you do not have one.

    3. Thank you for your time, I have managed to obtain the book on Creech by June Small. What a size on the Bobbett Family mind blowing and so many John’s! our grandfather was born in Creech… Albert John Bobbett his father being John from Lyng who married a young lady called Emma Snook moving to Barry, Vale of Glam around the 1900 for some reason she returned either to have her children in Creech or to have them baptized in the church. Do you know if any Snooks still reside in Creech? We know my Auntie Flossie [bobbett] visited Creech where she met and married her husband he was a Burgess both buried together in your church. We are also amazed to find that
the Sweetings in our village of St. Athan also came from Creech and so it goes on, i can’t quite believe it…The photo of the home guard Jack and Tacker Sweeting have passed there looks on to Nancy Woods nee Sweeting’s son Fred its truely amazing. Page 82 Mr Hurrell and class 1884 second row 4th little girl from the right she looks just like us, do you know if their is any records of there names? I am afraid i have the bug along with another two sisters and a niece! We will look forward to your on line information.
      Regards
      Jackie

    4. Hi Jackie,

With the churchyard survey about 20% done I have just come across a Bobbett headstone, John Bobbett 1848 and his widow Harriet 1857, badly flaking – it does not photograph well.
Looking in the local telephone directory there are no Snooks but two Bobbetts, not in the Creech area. My wife thinks there as some Snooks in the next village – Ruishton.
As to the names in the photos my only resource (which is on this website) is the school history 1873 -1973, which talks of the three admissions registers for the school, who holds them now I am not sure. Mr Hurrell is recorded as taking his post in 1885 so not sure which is correct date. The Sweeting’s family is still in the village.
If you have the bug, the Somerset Heritage Centre may have some extra information.
      Regards
